Sara Jo Buehler graduated from Haverford College (B.S., with Honors in Political Science) and Stanford Law School (J.D., with Distinction). While in law school, Ms. Buehler served as a Note Editor of the Stanford Law Review.
Ms. Buehler originally moved to Hawaii following law school to serve as a law clerk to the Honorable Helen Gillmor, at the United States District Court for the District of Hawaii. She returned to Hawaii in 2003, believing it would be a great place to raise her children and practice law.
Ms. Buehler was selected as a 2016 Fellow of the Hawaii State Bar Association Leadership Institute. She is a member of the HSBA, and the Family Law Section. She served on the Honolulu City and County Salary Commission from 2011 – 2016, the last three years as Chair. She has served as an officer of the Family Law Section in 2022 (Secretary), 2023 (Vice-Chair, then Acting Chair), and 2024 (Chair).
Prior to starting her own firm, Ms. Buehler worked at several small firms in Honolulu and San Francisco, where her practice focused on family law matters, trusts and estates litigation, guardiation, including trials, settlement conferences, mediation, arbitration, discovery disputes and motions practice. In 2023 Sara was honored by the Mediation Center of the Pacific with the Problem Solver Attorney Award.
Ms. Buehler prides herself on being client-focused and empathetic, working with individuals to obtain their desired results. Ms. Buehler bases her analysis of the case and potential outcomes based upon current law. Ms. Buehler adjusts her approach based upon the client’s requests, allowing the client to determine how aggressive an approach she or he wishes.
Ms. Buehler also has extensive experience in the non-profit sector as an Executive Director, board member and volunteer. She is actively involved in her children’s activities and schools as a volunteer. She is also a trained docent at the Honolulu Museum of Arts where she has given tours to school children and warriors returning from various deployments. She is currently serving on the board of Kristi Yamaguchi’s Always Dream.
Ms. Buehler published an article, "Child Care Tax Credits, the Child Tax Credit and the Tax Payer Relief Act of 1997: Congress' Missed Opportunity to Provide Parents Needed Relief from the Astronomical Cost of Child Care," in the Hastings Women's Law Journal in the Summer 1998 issue. She also has two published decisions, Yoneji v. Yoneji, 136 Haw. 11 (2015) and Yoneji v. Yoneji, No. CAAP 14-0000747.
Ms. Buehler spends her free time enjoying the ocean or hiking.
Ms. Buehler is admitted to practice law in the state and federal courts of Hawaii and California (inactive).
